There's almost nothing that gets me as excited as going to a concert. No matter the band, no matter my level of interest in the band going into the night, there's always a special feeling when I'm standing in the crowd and killing time on my phone or chatting about something weird with my friends before the house lights come down and the band takes the stage. I've among a select few that have been lucky enough to secure a photo pass to see some of my favorite bands up close (for three songs, at least), and it's produced a lot of great shots and even greater memories over the years.
Among the many things that 2020 took away from my typical lifestyle, one of the most disappointing things that I thought about was I had already shot two shows that year, and was lining up to shoot a lot more. It was so cool to see the growth I'd made over the years, and I was gearing up to have my busiest year of shooting shows in my life. I made sure I kept that in my mind as the months of quarantine and isolation rolled along, because I knew I'd be ready to dive head-first back into concert photography as soon as I got the chance. The thing about that, though, is that prior to this year, I'd been posting all of my photos on my criminally-overlooked Instagram account (@donnywags13) or the award-winning blog that accompanied my college radio show, The Garden Statement. IF you looked at the posts on this blog, you might not even know that I did photography at shows, so if I were to seek a photo pass right now, there's nothing I can point to in order to showcase my work. That changes now. For the rest of this post, you'll be treated to selections of my favorite concerts I've shot over the years. Enjoy!
First up, here's a metalcore grab-bag: Underoath, Veil of Maya, Dance Gavin Dance, Motionless in White, maybe a few more!
Up next, we've got the last Warped Tour (in it's touring festival version, at least) in 2018!
Now we've got a real doozy: Circa Survive, My favorite band, and Foxing!
Nothing like a show at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ. Especially when The Gaslight Anthem plays there.
Just two slideshows left! Here's some shots from Thrice's Vheissu Anniversary Tour, with appearances by mewithoutYou, Drug Church, and Holy Fawn.
And last, but certainly not least, the final show I was able to shoot before COVID shut down the live music industry: Silverstein's 20-Year Anniversary Tour, with I the Mighty and Four Year Strong!
It's been one of the greatest privileges of my life to be able to use my camera to take pictures at concerts, and I can't wait to get back to doing so again. If you're a press contact for a band who's reading this, I hope you enjoyed my audition to take pictures of your client. The photos are not available for download, but if you'd like one, let me know!
Whether it's in the photo pit or the mosh pit, I'll see you at a show soon!
